One of the six teenage sidekicks who originally formed the Justice League 's covert operations group, Kaldur was granted a chance to become Arthur Curry's protege after saving the first Aquaman's life during a battle with Ocean Master. Studious and mature beyond his years, Kaldur threw himself into the role of superhero, holding the responsibilities of his position in high honor. He abandoned his crush, however, after learning that she had become involved with his best friend while Kaldur was on the surface leading The Team. After that, Kaldur seemed to become married to his work, devoting himself entirely to becoming a worthy successor to the role of Aquaman. Young Justice season 3, episode 20, "Quiet Conversations" reveals that Kaldur's romantic life isn't quite as dead as previously believed. But the truth is that the writers of superhero adventures have been making strides ever since the '90s to make the world of capes a more diverse one when it comes to sexual and gender identities. Iceman — was a gay man, and the way it unfolded was unique in a way that could only happen in a superhero comic. The series opens with the original five X-men, including Iceman, being brought into the present while they're still teenagers. DC Comics continued to expand its roster of out superheroes this week by showing a same-sex kiss between Aquaman and Wynnde on the animated series Young Justice: Outsiders , a show about teenage superheroes. After becoming the new Aquaman, he kissed Wynnde, a resident of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Fans seemed to appreciate the reveal. The new Aquaman is known for being soft-spoken and clear-headed and is more or less the leader of his superhero team. Aquaman previously had romantic dealings with girls, hinting at the possibility that he might be bisexual.
Young Justice revealed a few changes to its cast with its third season, with one of the biggest coming from Kaldur'ahm, aka Aqualad. In the time between seasons 2 and 3, Aquaman left the Justice League to rule Atlantis. That permitted Kaldur to step into the Aquaman role, not only as a member of the Justice League, but as its new Earth-bound leader, with Wonder Woman overseeing the galactic team. Of course, Kaldur's experience leading the Justice League's covert-ops team of young heroes demonstrated he was up to the task of becoming the new Aquaman, but it hasn't exactly been a smooth transition. Tula, an Atlantean he previously had feelings for, died in battle years ago, and Kaldur also discovered his father is the DC villain Black Manta, sworn enemy of the former Aquaman, King Orin.
