Even before publication Sunday, news of the ad is generating both a sense of horror and an acceptance of the principle of free speech among San Francisco's large gay and lesbian population, which long has suffered the downside of censorship. It is one of four such ads that the 15 Christian-right groups have placed in the New York Times , Washington Post and other papers in the past month. The ad campaign has been felt as a political attack by gays and lesbians who note that the 15 groups have close ties to the national Republican Party leadership and coincide with a spate of anti-gay legislation and remarks by Republicans in Congress. Readers of the gay and lesbian press may soon be opening the pages of their local gay papers and finding something astonishing: advertisements by conservative groups that hope to convince gays and lesbians they can and should change their sexual orientation. That's exactly what readers of the Bay Area Reporter found when they flipped through the pages of the San Francisco weekly recently. The paper carried a 4-inch by 5-inch advertisement for a conference aimed at counseling gays and lesbians how to become straight.
