By no means am I trying to bring down the men of New York. In no way do I want to slander all four million men inhabiting the greatest city in the world because I know you're not all like this. I do think they should know, however, that just because they're living in Greatest City In the World doesn't mean they're the Greatest Men in the World. To women who share the other half of the city, it's fair to say they aren't living up to their end of the deal. No matter how well you thought you understood the opposite sex, any woman who excitedly enters New York eventually finds that her usual tricks and track record don't apply across the Brooklyn-, Manhattan-, Verrazano-, Queensboro- or George Washington bridge because, well, we're working with a whole different animal here.

As a young, single British guy crossing the Atlantic for a career in the United States, I was extremely curious about the dating life that was in store. After all, I'd watched my fellow countrymen in film and literature charm the hell out of beautiful American women. It was the summer of when I first landed in New York as a year-old, laden with warnings about American girls: they're high maintenance, my friends told me. I tried to brush this off—preconceptions are always dangerous when entering any sort of relationship. Still, when I met my first girlfriend in , a ballerina who had recently moved from San Francisco, I was immediately taken aback by an overarching obsession with status and money.
Why dating in NYC is different than anywhere else in the country
In the Torah, God promises Abraham more children than there are stars in the sky and grains of sand in the sea. But those children do tend to congregate — New York has the highest Jewish population of any city in the world other than Tel Aviv — higher, even, than Jerusalem. Some of us are stars, and some of us are just beach dirt, and never is that more evident than when dating.
New York is full of eligible bachelors from promoters to artists to everything in between, and oh boy, you'll meet everything in between. Hopefully, this isn't the first guy you meet, but if it is, be wary. Club promoters are only worried about one thing, and that's getting as many girls as possible lined up on that roped-off carpet.
