How : Best bet in the extreme lower river is to plunk sand shrimp, but you can also fish jigs and bobbers, yarn, etc. Sandy has fishing to match its reputation. As the first steelhead of the season start their way up the Sandy, many savvy anglers will target the lower portions of this beautiful river. Glass notes that although the early season saw less fish than in past years, there were some fish all the way to the hatchery at Cedar Creek by late November. Expect the fishing to really pick up after the holidays, and to stay good right through March. He refused to be pinned down about when the peak of the run will be, explaining that weather and flows in the river will decide that.

The mainstem Sandy River is now open for year-round fishing for fin-clipped salmon and steelhead below the mouth of the Salmon River, which enters the mainstem near the community of Brightwood, located upriver from the city of Sandy. An exception to the mainstem fishery is a two-month angling closure mid-September to mid-November in a posted area at Oxbow Regional Park, where protected fall Chinook spawn. The main river and tributaries above the Salmon River junction are closed to salmon and steelhead fishing. The Sandy is closed to angling from a boat upriver from a point just below the ramp at Oxbow, but some anglers fishing farther upstream use drift boats and rafts to travel to good holes and then get out at fishing stops.
Check out our Interactive Fishing Maps! Action comes in little bite-sized flurries, with a fish or two from Clifton Channel, a fish or two from Multnomah Channel, some more onesy-twosy bites around Willow Grove and Puget Island. But come mid-March, when the Big C opens from I-5 up and local salmon hunters start to descend in increasing numbers upon the fishery, it becomes time to belly up to the table for the main course. You're talking about several thousand fish that you wouldn't even see if you stayed up by Camas or Bonneville before the dam counts started to pick up.
