A woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer aged 14 has become a funeral director after losing friends to the disease. She asked to visit a funeral director a few years later as she wanted to know what had happened to her friends and fellow cancer sufferers after they died. She then spent five years training as a funeral director with Pengelly Funeral Directors in Saltash, Cornwall, before securing a permanent position there. Funeral director Erkin Guney, who runs a service in Hackney, London, said he buried twice the number of bodies in the past few months as he normally does in a year. A funeral director said dealing with spike in the number of people dying during the Covid pandemic was akin to being in a "war zone". Erkin Guney, the chairman of the UK Turkish Islamic Trust and Funeral Service, said he's had to bury twice as many people in the past few months as he normally does in a year. Mr Guney, whose business is based in Hackney, told MyLondon he was overwhelmed with work even with a team of six as they had four funerals a day and were on call 24 hours in case a body needed picking up. The funeral director said he struggled to comfort bereaved families because he couldn't stop to process all the deaths, while pointing out how his Turkish-Cypriot community alone saw people passing.
